We follow the adventures of the son of a famous mercenary, Almark, initially five years old. He lives within a troop of nomadic mercenaries who operate in the northern regions, where fighting is incessant. One day, the father will accidentally save the life of an old man, who happens to be the headmaster of a renowned magic academy. This is installed in the southern regions where peace reigns. The father will then obtain from the principal that his son can join the academy once he is nine years old. Indeed, the mercenary does not want his son to have the same life as him, that is to say a life of dangerous combat, where no one can be trusted, not even his allies, and where the we are abandoned as soon as we have lost all usefulness. However, the son does not agree, he wants to become a mercenary as powerful as his father and follow in his footsteps. At the age of eight, a terrible event occurred within the troop which forced our hero to take up arms for the first time. At nine years old, he has already killed and is already a talented warrior for his young age. But he will come close to death during a battle, which will once and for all convince his father to send him to the magic academy so that he can raise his status and one day be able to lead the crowds . We will then follow his eventful journey to the academy, then his life within it. But his beginnings promise to be difficult, since he will be denigrated by the other students because of his origins and will have to prove his worth! “Almark” is based on a successful light novel in Japan and drawn by Yunoki Hiyoto. The designs are particularly breathtaking. They fit perfectly with the medieval and fantastic universe of the title. The pages of the manga are dotted with quite violent scenes which highlight the cruel daily life of mercenaries. They will oppose more peaceful and sentimental scenes between parent and child. The father wishing a better life and far from the fighting for his son. The title also deals with a good number of subjects such as rejection or discrimination and which make us go through a whole range of feelings, such as anger, hatred, sadness, but also the joy of seeing our hero evolve in overcoming challenges and trying to integrate. The manga is action-packed with mercenaries fighting or using magic. The narration is also incredible, we oscillate at the start between moments of tranquility within the daily life of the troop and moments of fierce combat. The exchanges between Almark and his father are also absolutely tender, even if their points of view conflict. Almark is sure to delight fans of heroic fantasy with its deep story and touching characters.
