Immerse yourself in the daily life of 19th century Parisians!
In the 19th century, a rather imperturbable and cold 14-year-old girl, Céline, arrives in Paris to keep her promise to her teacher: to experience all kinds of things in the capital. But then she gets fired on the first day of her job as a waitress, then pushed around by Parisians in a hurry. It is there that she will meet an old man who will offer to accommodate her on the condition that she becomes his “eyes”.
Indeed, the old man is trying to write a book about the life of Parisians and will suggest that Céline try different professions so that her feelings can serve as material for his book. Céline will then do a whole bunch of odd jobs, through which she will meet different people who will tell her their stories and their dreams and who will little by little change our heroine.
Céline, a River Town is the new series from Akame Hinoshita, the author of Flowers of the Aegean Sea. We stay in the same vein as his previous series with a title that mixes slice of life, poetry and history.
We love walking around the city of Paris and observing the daily life of Parisians, whether they are simple citizens or from the bourgeoisie, through Céline's eyes. We thus discover the different professions of the time such as that of seamstress, servant or even lawyer and the author is never short of details, explanations and historical facts. The designs are also magnificent. They fit perfectly with the calm atmosphere of the story and pay a true homage to the unique architecture of the city of Paris.
Finally, the stories of the people Céline met are particularly touching and make us aware of the social conditions of the time, in particular the privileges of the Parisian bourgeoisie.
