An epic and dark shonen, from the author of Honetsugi, Bone Merchant!
We follow the adventures of a young boy, Gatto, who like his father before him was an assassin acting on behalf of the nation. These assassins aim to track down and kill individuals who have been judged as criminals by the country. Gatto, our hero, is just starting out as an assassin and is learning the ropes alongside one of his elders. One day, Gatto and his elder surprise their captain doing a strange ritual. The latter then kills the elder and transforms him into a monster. Gatto ends up committing his first assassination by killing his elder who begged him to do it, but Gatto is at the end of his strength and is on the verge of death. It is then that a “god of death” offers him a contract: to become immortal, but on the condition of being his slave. He accepts, determined to take revenge on the captain, but the latter is part of a secret organization and its members are capable of transforming into creatures called "angels of death". But the gods of death are there to hunt them. The first thing that strikes you is the landscapes. Indeed, the events take place within a maritime nation made up of several islands and which is very reminiscent of Italy and in particular of Venice. We will also have the opportunity to see throughout the series nods to Italy, such as characters wearing Venetian masks or moving on the canals using gondolas. Hojoy, the author of "Honetsugi, Bone Merchant", returns this time with "Grigio e Gatto", a more action-oriented title with high-energy fights. His new series still retains this dark side that his first work had, thanks to its monsters with a very particular design and its mature themes which touch on death and divinities. The storyline is also well-crafted. After reading the first volume, many questions arise. Who really are these “angels of death” and “gods of death”? What is the evil organization trying to do with the souls of humans? How can Gatto free himself from his slave status? Here we have a gripping and incredible shonen, which stands out for its dark side and the singularity of its duo of heroes, and which will delight fans of action and fighting.
