Hanatarô lives in a common house in the slums of Edo and nothing keeps him in this world anymore. When her young neighbor kills her stepfather who tries to rape her, Hanatarô presents himself to the authorities as the assassin. But Heizô Hasegawa, the leader of the brigade, recognizes in him a former sumo wrestler. A few years earlier, Hanataro was about to win the Supreme Yokozuna Title. Lest fame lead him to reject her, his mistress drugged him on the day of his career meet so he could not fight. Since that day, Hanatarô has lost the will to live. Hasegawa, aware of the story, prefers to try to find her rather than have an innocent man executed. It must be said that Hasegawa is a follower of "the flowery rope", this invisible link which chains men to existence by making them accept the truth whatever it is. She is the one who saves Hanatarô but she is also the one who leads the owner of a diner who killed a thug to denounce himself in public. After an almost miraculous return to life, Hanatarô becomes Hasegawa's henchman, assisting him in his daily life and going so far as to carry him when illness comes to deprive him of the use of his legs.
