In contemporary Japan, the function of kami, or deity, is attributed to humans endowed with supernatural powers and holders of a state diploma, who are then employed in shrines throughout the country. Nagi's grandmother was a goddess but, since her accidental death, no one has come forward to replace her at the city temple. There would however be an ideal candidate: Takeru, the twin brother of Nagi… Unfortunately, he remains cloistered in his room since the tragedy, only communicating with his sister through his gifts of telepathy and telekinesis. Devoid of this kind of power, the young girl has nevertheless developed a technique to cut short these mental intrusions when they are too insistent… because Takeru may be a recluse, but he is still talkative!
 
One morning, Nagi discovers his neighborhood in turmoil. A little boy, also expected to become a kami, has disappeared! She sets out to find him and finds him passed out in the nearby forest. Only, when she tries to bring him back, she is stopped by a terrifying force! Who can use their powers to kidnap a child? Going for broke, she uses her anti-Takeru psychic parry to fend off the attack… and it works! Without knowing it, Nagi has just proven that she is special, and finds herself enrolled in spite of herself in the training school of the gods! But how do you find a place among the nation's elite when you don't even know the nature of your own gift?
