Curiosity is not always a bad fault... Mao Mao, a young apothecary, is kidnapped and sold to the inner court as a servant. There she unravels the mystery surrounding the death of the emperor's son, which leads to her being spotted by Jinshi, an attractive eunuch, and entering the service of Lady Gyokuyo, one of the four main concubines.
During an outdoor reception, Mao Mao discovers that someone has attempted to poison Lady Llishu, another of the chief concubines. A servant then commits suicide and confesses to the crime in a letter, but Jinshi and Mao Mao continue the investigation, convinced that the real culprit is elsewhere...
