High school student Kimihiro Watanuki has always had the ability to see spirits. Constantly trampled, jostled and harassed by the ectoplasms he seems to attract, he wants more than anything to get rid of this annoying gift.
It is by entering this singular shop one day that he meets Yūko Ichihara, a witch who turns out to be able to free him from this gift he hates so much. However at Yūko everything has a price, she grants the wishes of her customers only if they pay her a payment of an equivalent value. Kimihiro will have to help the mysterious seer in her "wish trade", until the sum of her work reaches a value equivalent to her wish. Through this odd job, originally supposed to consist only of domestic help, he will meet a number of people and minds that he will see evolve according to Yūko's somewhat particular sales policy.
The plot is organized according to different supernatural-type "cases" (most often related to Yūko's clients and their wishes) presented in chronological order. Each of these events is an opportunity for the characters to learn different lessons, often difficult to accept, about existence and which allow them to evolve.
As the story continues, there are more and more crossovers with the plot of Tsubasa, to the point that it is often useful to read certain episodes of one of the two mangas to fully understand certain plot points of the other. It seems reasonable to think that the two works were in fact elaborated as two inseparable facets of the same story; this impression is particularly reinforced by the recent chapters of Tsubasa.
xxxHOLiC is distinguished by a mood that is both humorous and dark. Indeed, if some characters are fun (Yūko, Mokona, the relationship between Dômeki and Watanuki), the story can at times take on a much more serious tone. Supernatural phenomena are often an opportunity to introduce gloomy situations, and all the cases in which the protagonists intervene do not necessarily find a happy ending.
